Cattail Cottage

Living large in a small second home.

Cattail Cottage (featured in Vermont Magazine) - Living Room

Robin Brand and Neda Ulaby bought a summer camp on beautiful lakefront property on the largest natural lake in the state of Vermont: Lake Bomoseen. The old camp house had never been intended for year-round use. It was tiny, and its uncomfortably low ceilings had suffered damage from a leaky roof. These factors made it unfeasible for any hope of it becoming a rental or getaway home for the new owners as it was and kept the house from really fitting into the setting of such a pristine piece of property.

Cocaine Kills

Tara Jean Smith

Jan. 31, 1976 - Feb 1, 2012

Tara J Smith

Tara J Smith

Iv user, age 36, dying of heart failure

Please spread the word. Tara wants to prevent others from her fate

Will be 36 Jan 31, 2012.

She has 1-10% chance of living more than a month.

Infection ravages her heart muscle and abscesses are between her two valves, and around her aorta valve. Because of the weaken muscle around the aorta valve, the valve could explode at any time.

Tara Smith 2Last fall she had open heart surgery and her valves were replaced. Right after Christmas she was brought in almost dead. The infection had gotten worse.

For a week she was sedated, so the doctors could give her ivs as well as put a tube down her throat.

Fighting cocaine addiction for years, her use of ivs probably caused the massive infections in her body and in her heart.  She finally went clean this year.

I met her and her brother, Rob, and sister Tami, 30 years ago. They were full of energy and life and creativity. All three of them worked with me. Tara worked for several years, managing my office, editing slides, propping and styling rooms, and handling cameras and lights. She was ideal for this work. And I so loved her and having her part of my life and business.  She got married and later divorced and has two strappling sons.

After her mom died, in 1998, friends introduced her to cocaine.  And it has been downhill ever since. Lying, stealing, not showing up for work. Until recently, I never could understand the way the brain works with a person addicted to cocaine.

Tara wants to tell her story, to help prevent someone else from following her path.  So, if you have a publication that would like to interview her, please call soon. (802) 238-4213.

And in the meantime, prayers work.  There is a very slim chance, according to Yale Univ. studies, that her heart could repair itself. Wouldn't that be wonderful.

Peace

Carolyn

Tara's 36th Birthday

Tara's 36th Birthday

Tara "had a blast" at her 36th birthday party, wearing a fancy hat with candles on it, gift from her support group at the hospital. And then slept peacefully until 8 pm om Feb 1, 2012, with friends, family ministers, nurses, doctors, support group from FAHC.   Thank you everyone for all the love and warmth you have given to her especially during these last few months of surgery, hope, pain, and finally peace.  Because of all of you she was finally able to go clean from street drugs, and return to the Tara we had grown up with.

The Past & Present: Wilmington, Vermont PDF Print E-mail

Wilmington flood of 1938 Irene-Wilmington-2011af-cbates0124
Historic Image of Wilmington (left); Image by Carolyn Bates 2011 (right)

The town was founded around 1751 and was located at the top of Lisle Hill.  The fathers of the town later chose to locate down the hill by the river, casually referred to as “Mill Hollow”. There seems to be a big discrepancy whether the town was chartered in 1751 because a subsequent charter was granted in 1764 to other proprietors under the name Draper.  But the town was never organized under the charter.  The Wilmington charter prevailed with settlers voting not to settle under the Draper Charter. The society is very fortunate to have just printed a book about the old town and how it was formed. The book was printed by the generosity of the 1836 Country Store and Norton House owners.

Irene’s Eye – in remembrance of 28 August 2011

By Julie Lineberger

Irene’s Eye – in remembrance of 28 August 2011 Irene set her sights on our small Vermont village of Wilmington, quite an unexpected course.  Her eye, however, allowed some things to be seen more clearly, and other issues to be blurred.  For our family, as well as our community, it was a multilevel watershed.  It brought to focus who we are and how, beneath daily trappings, we work together from the same foundation.

It rained all night the 27th.  Our friend MaryAnn called early Sunday morning to see if we were still up for brunch.  Intrepid as always, my husband, younger daughter and I set out for Chimney Hill around 9:00am.  Passing Manyu’s Boutique where Jadria worked when not at Bates College, we called Manyu to say we would come help move everything out of the basement after brunch . . . she should meet us there at 11:00 as there was sure to be flooding.

Look what I got for Christmas this year! PDF Print E-mail

today ms sally gets her xmas present from Carolyn

This year I bought Ms. Sally a MeteorLight for Christmas. This toy is great and as you can see, she loves it.

A little about the Meteorlight

Whether your schedule prevents you from exercising your canine buddy during the day, or you just prefer carousing with him or her at night, our tennis ball-sized Meteorlight K-9 LED Ball is the perfect exercise toy. Push the button, the LED light begins its steady glow, and you can both see what you're doing and have fun doing it. Perfect for romps in the yard after sundown, or, if you're both craving a little socialization, take it to the dog park at night, turn it on, and watch the interested human/dog crowd form around you both! Bright, durable, and water resistant, the Meteorlight floats and comes with two long-life, easily replaced batteries. (Please note: this is NOT A CHEW TOY. Use with constant supervision. Do not leave unattended with the animal.)

There are two kinds! Check them out for yourself!
